Discover Columbus Fish Market

Walking into Columbus Fish Market feels like stepping into a coastal spot tucked neatly into central Ohio. Located at 1245 Olentangy River Rd, Columbus, OH 43212, United States, this diner-style seafood restaurant has long been a go-to for locals who want fresh fish without pretense. I first stopped in after a long afternoon near Grandview, expecting a quick bite, and ended up lingering over the menu longer than planned because there was simply too much that sounded good.

The menu leans heavily into seafood classics, but it’s not stuck in the past. You’ll see familiar staples like fish and chips, clam chowder, and broiled salmon alongside seasonal specials that change depending on what’s coming in fresh. On one visit, I watched the staff explain the catch of the day to a nearby table, breaking down where the fish came from and how it was best prepared. That kind of transparency builds trust, especially in a landlocked city where seafood quality can be hit or miss. According to data from the National Fisheries Institute, freshness and proper handling are the two biggest factors affecting seafood taste and safety, and this place clearly takes both seriously.

One process that stands out is how the kitchen handles preparation. Fish is portioned daily, lightly seasoned, and cooked to order, which explains why plates arrive hot without feeling overworked. I once ordered the grilled mahi-mahi and asked for minimal seasoning, and it came out perfectly flaky, letting the natural flavor do the heavy lifting. Moments like that back up what many online reviews mention repeatedly: consistent execution. Regular diners often describe the experience as always reliable, and after several visits, that description feels earned.

Service plays a big role here too. Servers tend to know the menu inside and out, often offering suggestions based on what you like rather than pushing the priciest item. On a busy Friday night, our server recommended splitting a seafood platter because portions run generous, which saved us money and kept the table relaxed. Hospitality research from Cornell University has shown that knowledgeable, guest-focused service directly increases perceived value, and that rings true in this dining room.

The dining space itself strikes a balance between casual and polished. It’s comfortable enough for a family dinner yet appropriate for a low-key date. Booths fill up quickly during peak hours, but the wait is usually manageable. Many reviews mention the atmosphere as casual but polished, which sums it up well without overselling it. Noise levels stay reasonable, making conversation easy even when the room is full.

Location matters too. Being close to downtown Columbus and nearby neighborhoods makes it accessible whether you’re coming from work or meeting friends. Parking is straightforward, and the surrounding area offers a nice flow if you want to walk off your meal afterward. While the restaurant doesn’t try to reinvent seafood dining, it doesn’t need to. Its strength lies in doing the basics well, again and again.

There are a few limitations worth noting. If you’re looking for an extensive plant-based menu or experimental cuisine, options are limited. The focus remains firmly on fish, shellfish, and traditional sides. That said, for diners who appreciate straightforward seafood prepared with care, this spot delivers exactly what it promises, and that honesty is part of why so many locals keep coming back.

  • A lot of great options, but be sure to ask about limited specials not on the menu. Got a scallop and mushroom risotto that is to die for. The spicy shrimp appetiser and clam chowder were great as well. Nice quiet atmosphere and attentive and friendly staff.

  • A girlfriend & I stopped here for lunch. We got the fish tacos with a Cesar salad. Large portion & food was good. Our server was Aiden & he was attentive & followed up several times to be sure we were good. Judy was helpful in taking our picture before we left. Everything was great except our Sangria cocktail that was watered down & I question if it had the right amount of alcohol it was claimed to be made with.

  • When I travel to Columbus Ohio for work, the Columbus Fish Market is my favorite place to have dinner. The food always taste fresh, the specials are gracious, and the staff is attentive. I recommend coming on Twin Tail Tueday’s and asking to be seated with Chloe. You won’t be disappointed.

  • Columbus has many restaurants. And this is place is definitely a catch of delicious dinning. I read mixed reviews of this place. And thankful I tried this place out. Quality and service were top notch! Perfect portions with a artful display on your plate. Will be returning again!

  • Fish Market is a nice restaurant! This time my food wasn't as good. I hadn't been there about 12 years! The potatoes were good! Wasn't a fan of the broccolini . Had a great waiter Beth. My food came out not warm! Inside the restaurant was cold! Beth made it right! I order the Market seafood dish it was salmon@, , & crab cakes - plus 2 sides which I got & broccolini ! Everyone was really nice. I was expecting it to be crowded in the evening before Father's Day but it was empty. I am a fan of Mitchell's other restaurant. Try it for yourself it could of been me! Blessings

  • We had an absolutely stunning lunch at Columbus Fish Market. The flavours were outstanding and this is definitely a top ten Friday seafood experience after over 300 in a row. Chloe our server was amazing and we couldn’t thank her enough. Once again we paired lunch with a good New Zealand Sav Blanc. Way too much food but we gave it a red hot shot and there was very little left on the table at the end of lunch. We were offered take away boxes by Chloe but we were not about to be defeated by the sea.
